TECHNOLOGY FOR RECONNECTION: Using Online Tools for Community Building
2 Saturdays, June 30 and July 21, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day; Stanford campus Despite the proliferation of technology tools for building community, recent studies have shown Americans becoming increasingly disconnected from each other and the greater community, with results ranging from decreased civic involvement to fewer close confidantes and increased loneliness. Is it possible to enhance community by finding new ways to bridge gaps in geography, race, gender, and social class? How can online tools such as instant messaging (IM) and blogs be used for true revitalization? Participants in this course will examine these issues by experimenting with online tools for community building, and doing and sharing writing exercises that help uncover more about personal beliefs. Students will create and develop a blog for completing assignments and providing peer feedback, use podcasts, social networking, and IM tools to explore the concept of "technology for reconnection", and co-create strategies for enhancing community in personal and professional settings.
