Storycatching: Writing as the Art of Connection
An East Bay Writing Workshop with Carolyn Foster
Seven Monday evenings, September 11 through December 4, 2006
There is a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn?t change.
"The Way It Is" William Stafford
We make our lives bigger or smaller, more expansive or more limited, according to the interpretation of life that is our story. Whether we speak or write these stories, we constantly weave life events into narrative and interpret everything that happens through the veil of story. The unceasing interplay between experience and narrative is a uniquely human attribute. We are the storytellers, the ones who put life into words.
Christina Baldwin, Storycatcher
When you write your story, both your story and your life change. Writing offers a way to understand the complex patterns we've woven and been woven into by our own actions, the places we've lived, and those who have guided, blocked, confused, or encouraged us. Storycatching means rendering the vivid details of experience so you see your life whole and become more adept at following the connective threads of your creative identity.
I've structured this workshop to stitch 7 meetings over 13 weeks, allowing more writing and integration between sessions. I'll encourage writing exchanges between sessions through email or blogging (quick/easy instructions given if you're new to blogging). Each workshop session will alternate freewriting warm-ups from topics and themes I'll provide with opportunities to read our work and to give and receive constructive feedback. As always, a community of support will grow out of our shared stories.
